Jacobson, reportedly under the influence of alcohol, used obscenities to attack &lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:placename st="on"&gt;Notre Dame&lt;/st1:placename&gt;  &lt;st1:placetype st="on"&gt;University&lt;/st1:placetype&gt;&lt;/st1:place&gt;, the Christian faith and even the person of Christ. To the credit of those in attendance, she was booed off the stage.&lt;/p&gt;        &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;The &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Chicago Tribune&lt;/span&gt; reported that Jacobson was suspended for one week for her reckless and offensive comments. In a statement released through ESPN, Jacobson called her comments "foolish and insensitive." Jacobson's remarks came just two days after another TV anchor was suspended for offensive language. The Golf Channel suspended Kelly Tilghman for two weeks for saying on air that young players who wanted to challenge Tiger Woods should "lynch him in a back alley."&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;All of us can recall times when we said things that we later regretted.&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;Perhaps we spoke out of anger or hurt, or under the influence of alcohol or another substance. Fortunately, we don’t have people recording us on video cameras and so our careless words are rarely repeated – or are they?&lt;/p&gt;        &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;In Matthew 12:36 Jesus said, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned.&lt;/span&gt;" Don’t kid yourself, words are important.&lt;span style=""&gt; &lt;/span&gt;They have the power to hurt or heal, build up or tear down. With 29 passing touchdowns and 22 rushing touchdowns last fall, Tebow displayed the kind of versatility and athleticism that distinguished him as the best college football player in the nation. Even more remarkable, Tebow is the first sophomore in history to win the 73-year-old Heisman.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is a “rest of the story” you need to hear. Tebow’s parents, Bob and Pam, were missionaries in the Philippines when Pam became pregnant with Tim. Shortly before becoming pregnant, Pam had been treated for amoebic dysentery, contracted from contaminated drinking water. She was still being treated with a series of strong medications when she became pregnant. Her physicians believed the medications had irreversibly damaged her unborn child. She was strongly encouraged to have an abortion.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Because of her faith, Pam refused to consider aborting her baby.  She carried the baby to term, spending the last two months of her pregnancy in bed and on August 14, 1987, she gave birth to a healthy baby boy, who she described as “skinny and rather long.” “The combination of Timmy's God-given talent, hard work, character and leadership have made a mark on and off the football field,” says Pam.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is sad to think of how many potential Heisman Trophy winners, political leaders, scientists, inventors, doctors, preachers and others never had a chance to make their mark because their mothers chose to give into the pressure to abort. Since the legalization of abortion on demand in January, 1974, 49 million Americans have been deprived of their most basic constitutional and God-given right — the right to life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There will be a time in your life, if it has not happened already, when you will have the opportunity to influence someone who is considering an abortion.  It may be a friend, a child or grandchild, a nephew or niece. After five turnovers in the first half, the Cowboys trailed by seventeen points. Quarterback Tony Romo, along with the entire team, showed incredible composure in the second half, coming back to score 9 points in the last 20 seconds to win the game. It moved them to a 5-0 record on the season and gave all of us plenty to talk about around the water cooler on Tuesday morning.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span&gt;Not only was it a tremendous win, but it also demonstrated a great lesson in coming back from failure.  Tony Romo in his second season as the Cowboys’ quarterback threw five interceptions, resulting in two Bills’ touchdowns and fumbled away another turnover. Six turnovers in a game is any NFL quarterback’s worst nightmare and could severely impact job security. His performance in the last three minutes of the game, however, demonstrated that Romo could become one of the NFL’s great quarterbacks by maintaining incredible concentration under some of the most strenuous circumstances. Ultimately Romo and the ‘Boys won because they refused to give up.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span&gt;In October of 1941 the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was asked to speak at the Harrow School where he had attended as a youth.  After summarizing the overwhelming threat that Hitler and Nazi Germany posed for Great Britain and the free world, Churchill spoke these words, “Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never--in nothing, great or small, large or petty--never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.” His iron will and the resolve of the British and American people ultimately prevailed over the Axis threat.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span&gt;Proverbs 24:17 reminds us, “&lt;em&gt;Though a righteous man falls seven times, he rises again, but the wicked are brought down by calamity&lt;/em&gt;.” This verse reminds us that failure is a normal part of life. The question is not “Will you fail”, but rather “When will you fail?” We fail at times in our business pursuits, career objectives, financial investments, personal relationships and in our spiritual walk.  Sometimes we fail because of bad choices, sometimes due to lack of execution or preparation. Sometimes we fail because we cannot get beyond obstacles that block our path.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;span&gt;My friend in Christ, don’t allow the failures of the past to keep you from tomorrow’s victories. It is time to get up, dust yourself off and get back on that horse. Last September Chief Knoebel made the national news for writing a ticket to a motorist who drove past a stopped school bus.  The ticket resulted in a fine of $235 and an increased insurance premium.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Why did an every day traffic violation make the news? Because the Chief wrote the ticket to himself.  He drove past the school bus in his police cruiser with his lights flashing and suddenly realized what he had done.  He wrote the ticket to himself and paid the fine. The story surfaced after it showed up in court records and local media reports. Knoebel says he has received 150 congratulatory e-mails from places like Thailand, Russia and New Zealand. Two people offered to send him money to help with the fine, but he turned down the offers.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dick Knoebel’s actions are a great example of integrity.  Someone has defined &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;integrity &lt;/span&gt;as &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;what you do when no one else is watching&lt;/span&gt;. Integrity implies a consistency with your words and deeds, regardless of the circumstances.  Ultimately, integrity goes deeper than your words and deeds, to the core of your being.  &lt;span style="font-weight: bold;"&gt;It is more a matter of who you are&lt;/span&gt;, than what you say or do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Integrity is critical if you are going to honor God in this life. It becomes an internal GPS, sort of a moral compass that guides you through the many temptations which the world throws your way. Without integrity, a man will be loss in the moral relativity that permeates our culture.  He will make his choices based on intimidation, greed or blind ambition, rather than the eternal principles of God’s Word.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Proverbs 11:3 reminds us, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;The integrity of the upright will guide them, but the crookedness of the treacherous will destroy them.&lt;/span&gt;” My brother, I challenge you to be a man of integrity today. He was given the name “Stonewall” at the first major battle of the Civil War, the First Battle of Bull Run, because he stood like a “stone wall” in the face of a Union counterattack. His life story is well told in the movie &lt;a href="http://www.godsandgenerals.com/" target="_blank"&gt;&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Gods and Generals&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/a&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jackson was highly disciplined, courageous and a military genius.  He was also known for his fierce loyalty and devotion to Robert E. Lee. On one occasion, Lee sent a message to Jackson to come by his headquarters and visit with him concerning a certain matter the next time he was in the area.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The next morning, Jackson rose well before dawn, riding by horseback through a heavy snow and arriving at Lee’s headquarters just as the General was having breakfast.  Lee expressed surprise on seeing Jackson so soon, commenting that his message did not convey a spirit of urgency, but rather asked Jackson to report at his convenience. Jackson responded, “Sir, your slightest wish is my greatest command.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When our children were small Patti and I wanted them to understand the importance of obeying God. We taught them the scriptural definition of obedience – obedience is doing exactly what I am asked to do, when I am asked to do it, with the right heart attitude. Delayed obedience, incomplete obedience or begrudging obedience is actually disobedience by God’s definition.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus communicated the importance of obedience like this, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;If you love me, keep my commandments.&lt;/span&gt;” Obedience is one of the clearest evidences of a sincere love for God. My brother, is your obedience to Christ a complete obedience?  Is it timely?  Is it done with the right heart attitude? In 1996, Chang was facing Pete Sampras in a rare all-American Open final. Though Chang lost in straight sets, he used the opportunity to do something he did throughout his professional career, point people to Christ.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over his professional career Michael Chang won 37 tournaments, earning over $19 million and reaching the #2 ranking in the world. His rise to being a top ranked world player started with a huge win in Paris in 1989.  Seventeen year old Michael Chang shocked the tennis world by defeating the top rated seeds to win the French Open. He became the youngest man ever to win a Grand Slam event. World Tennis magazine described his performance in Paris as "tennis’s purest example of intelligence."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But Chang had another explanation, one that stayed consistent through the years since he gave his life to Jesus Christ: "I wasn’t playing out there. Jesus Christ is alive and well!" Chang believes his continued success is testimony to something-or Someone-else entirely.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"People sometimes ask me, 'Don't you wish you were bigger?' There’s a reason God made me 5-foot-9 in a world where the average height of players is 6-foot-2. If I’m able to go out and win a tournament, it’s really to God’s glory. It obviously has nothing to do with my height or anything else." "I felt God used me to show the world that you don’t always have to be bigger or stronger to come out on top. When the Lord is with you and wants you to be victorious, you will be."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When discussing his incredible achievements in the world of professional tennis, Chang has said, “Success for me is using my talents in the way that God wants me to use them. When you touch people in a Christ-like way, it lasts a lifetime. That’s the way success should be defined."  What a great reminder that true success will ultimately be measured by what you take with you into eternity.  Only two things last forever, the Word of God and the souls of people. The time and energy you commit to influencing people for Christ is an eternal investment. Phillips brings over twenty years of NFL coaching experience to the Cowboys. He also brings something else, an understanding and appreciation of the importance of family.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hours after being hired as the Cowboys head coach, one reporter asked Phillips how he felt about public sentiment that he is not a sexy hire. "Well," the 59-year-old coach chuckled, "I don't know if my wife would say that."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a February interview with the &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Dallas Morning News&lt;/span&gt;, Phillips mentioned that throughout his coaching career, he has maintained a standing date night with his wife. Every Friday night he takes Laurie out on a date. He stated that he learned the importance of maintaining a strong marriage after watching his father, legendary coach “Bum” Phillips, spend time with his mother.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In making his marriage a priority, Phillips is providing a great example for his coaches, players, fans and especially, his children.  As a successful coach, Phillips understands that winning games requires time, energy and hard work.  Being an effective husband and father is not so different. A marriage is too important to take for granted.  It must be fed, nurtured and protected.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ephesians 5 reminds us, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it …&lt;/span&gt;” Perhaps it is time to take an inventory on your commitment to your marriage. Take a tip from Wade Phillips and start dating again. Normally, an event like this would not draw a lot of attention.  This one, however, made the national news, because along with the book Nuranen handed the librarian a check for $171.32 to cover 47 years worth of late fees.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The book &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Prince of Egypt&lt;/span&gt;, with its last due date stamped June 2, 1960, was part of the young Nuranen’s fascination with Egypt. He said his mother misplaced the book while cleaning the house. The family came across it every so often, only to set it aside again. He found it recently while looking through a box in the attic. “I figured I’d better get it in before we waited another 10 years,” he said after returning it. He added, “Fifty-seven years would be embarrassing.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nuranen said he went on to visit Egypt and 54 other countries, and all 50 states, but he never did finish the book. He now lives in Los Angeles, where he teaches seventh-grade social studies and language arts. Commenting on Nuranen, librarian Sue Zubiena said, “The library had long ago lost any record of the book. I’m going to use it as an example. It’s never too late to return your books.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Men, there are some other things that it is never too late to do.  It is never too late to start telling your wife that you love her or your children that you are proud of them or your parents that you appreciate them.  It is never too late to ask forgiveness for wrongs committed or say you are sorry.  It is never too late to start spending time with God in Bible Study and prayer or sharing the gospel with other people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hebrews 3:7-8 reminds us, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;So, as the Holy Spirit says: "Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts ...&lt;/span&gt;.” When God speaks, we become instantly accountable to what He tells us.  Thankfully we do not have to live in the prison of the past. Larry King, the CNN interviewer and radio/TV personality, tells of a visit to Miami’s Joe Robbie Stadium before a spring training game. King says manager &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tommy_Lasorda" target="_blank"&gt;Tommy Lasorda&lt;/a&gt; was introducing him to players and having a good time. They walked past &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Murray" target="_blank"&gt;Eddie Murray&lt;/a&gt; at first base and Lasorda said, ‘Hey, Eddie, how you doing?’ Murray replied simply, ‘Okay.’&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At that, Lasorda went wild. “Okay? Okay? Two million dollars a year. It’s March. There ain’t a cloud in the sky. You’re standing there wearing a major-league uniform. You’re thirty-three years old, you’re going to the Hall of Fame, and you’re saying okay? You say, ‘Great, Tommy!’” Murray, looking at Lasorda like he was a maniac, seemed at a loss for words. Lasorda tried again, “You say it: ‘I feel great!’” So Eddie started saying, “I feel great!”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I have heard my friend &lt;a href="http://12.5.174.156/about_BillGlass.cfm" target="_blank"&gt;Bill Glass&lt;/a&gt;, professional football player and evangelist, say many times, “Your attitude determines your altitude.” By that he means that you will only go as far in life as your attitude allows. Nobody wants to be around or follow someone with a bad attitude.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How do you change your attitude? Your attitude is shaped by what you think about.  Our tendency is to focus on the negative, what someone has aptly called, “stinkin’ thinkin.” Too often we are fixated on the challenging circumstances of our life. While you may not be able to change your circumstances, you can change your attitude. Perhaps you have heard the old rhyme, “Two men looked past prison bars.  One saw mud, the other saw stars.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Philippians 4:8 reminds us of the importance of what we think about, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things.&lt;/span&gt;” Men, I encourage you to do an attitude check.  Is your attitude in line with things mentioned in the verse above? Harry Hartman was pitching for the old Brooklyn Dodgers. He was a gifted young ballplayer whose day of glory arrived in 1918 when he was called up from the minors to pitch against the Pittsburgh Pirates.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As he approached the mound, he was thinking that this was the moment he had dreamed about, the beginning of a great career. His dreams began to fade, however, when his first pitch was hit for a single. The next batter tripled. Rattled, Hartman walked the next batter and the next hit for a single. The next batter tripled. Rattled more, he walked the next batter on four straight pitches, and when he did throw a strike to the next hitter, it went for a single.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Frustrated and dejected, Hartman had had enough. He headed for the showers, dressed, and walked out of the stadium to a naval recruiting office, where he enlisted. The next day, he was in a military uniform, never to be heard from in professional baseball again.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I read that story, I wondered if Hartman ever had regrets about giving up too quick on professional baseball. Think of all the time and energy he expended to get to the place of being a major league ball player. What if he had stayed in baseball, practicing more and working harder to be a better pitcher? Could he have had a long, successful career in baseball?  Could he have made the All-Star team or even been a Hall of Famer?  You and I will never know the answer to those questions because Harry Hartman quit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are you considering quitting something because it is hard? Let’s face it, sometimes it is hard to be married, to be a father, to stay with a challenging career or to build a ministry. At times quitting looks very attractive as a quick way to escape the pressure, discouragement or boredom of hard things. God has a strong word for those who look at quitting as an easy way out, &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up"&lt;/span&gt;(Galatians 6:9).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God promises to honor our efforts if our desire is to please Him and grow His Kingdom. The “Stella” is named after Stella Liebeck, the woman who sued McDonalds after she spilled a cup of coffee on herself while driving. Last year, the #1 Stella award went to Allen Ray Heckard. Even though Heckard is 3 inches shorter, 25 pounds lighter, and 8 years older than former basketball star Michael Jordan, the Portland, Oregon, man says he looks a lot like Jordan, and is often confused for him.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He claims the confusion has created a lot of grief for him. As a result, he believes he deserves $52 million "for defamation and permanent injury", plus $364 million in "punitive damage for emotional pain and suffering", plus the SAME amount from Nike co-founder Phil Knight, for a grand total of $832 million. He dropped the suit after Nike's lawyers chatted with him, where they presumably explained how they'd counter-sue if he pressed on.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My friend, I hope you bear a spiritual resemblance with one of the most well known men who ever lived – Jesus Christ. According to Romans 8:29 God’s grand purpose for your life is to conform you to the image, or likeness of His Son.  Being Christ-like does not imply that we are on an equal standing with Christ. He is the preeminent Son of God and will be forever exalted beyond any mortal. Becoming Christ-like refers to the work of God in our lives by which we gradually begin to think and act more like Him.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As we grow and mature in our faith we become more like Christ. As we become more like Christ, we bring God greater glory. As we glorify God in our home, workplace and community, people are drawn to Him. Cho Seung-Hui, 23, a senior English major, went on a shooting spree that left more than thirty dead and dozens more wounded. His violent essays, menacing photos and incoherent video messages provided few answers to what motivated him to hurt so many people.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On Tuesday, university leaders organized a public convocation on the campus of Virginia Tech to mourn the dead, pray for the wounded and begin the healing process. Almost 10,000 people filled Cassell Coliseum while another 20,000 sat next door in Lane Stadium to watch the service on a jumbo screen.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;University officials, faculty, several local clergy, and President Bush, spoke to the crowd of tens of thousands. The first speaker, a Muslim cleric, spoke in the name of Allah and quoted the Quran. The second speaker, a Buddhist community leader, reminded the crowd that people are basically good. The third speaker, a female representative from the Jewish community, quoted from Ecclesiastes, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;There is a time and a place for everything.&lt;/span&gt;”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Interestingly, the fourth and final clergy speaker, representing the Christian faith, was a Lutheran minister. He spoke of the “sovereignty of life” and referred to the many “religious streams that have refreshed parched people for many generations.” President Bush also sought to comfort the mourners by reminding them that millions were praying for them and commending them to the “comfort in the grace and guidance of a loving God.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some final remarks were offered by a popular English professor, Nikki Giovanni, who compared the tragic shooting to children in Africa dying of AIDS, Mexican children needing fresh water and elephants being killed for their ivory. When all was said and done, none of the speakers had used the name of Jesus Christ or even referred to him indirectly.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In a sense, this almost compounds the tragedy. Think about it. In America today it is all right to mention Allah and Buddha by name in public, but not Jesus Christ. I wonder if Cho, the gunman, ever had the opportunity to hear the life-transforming message of the gospel of Christ. How many of the students who were listening that day needed to hear that true healing, comfort and forgiveness comes from a personal relationship with Christ?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Acts 4:12 Peter, a first generation follower of Christ, boldly proclaimed that “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.&lt;/span&gt;” He spoke these words in a day when it was illegal to speak in the name of Christ. He chose to act in a manner that was not only politically incorrect, but could have resulted in imprisonment or even death. In an interview shortly after the win, the Iowa native talked about his wife and 14-week-old son, thanked his coaches and to the surprise of many, gave glory to God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With all the attention on Tiger, most golf enthusiasts put Johnson way down the list as a possible contender. Though considered a master with his irons, he ranks 57 in driving distance among the 60 players who made the cut. As the tournament progressed, however, he continued to climb the leader list. He started the final round two shots behind third-round leader Stuart Appleby and one behind four-time Masters champion Tiger Woods, the heavy favorite in Sunday's sunny, but cool final round.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Johnson took the lead with birdies on holes 13, 14 and 16 and never surrendered it despite a bogey on the 17th hole. Less than a half-hour later, he was wearing the Green Jacket awarded to each year's Masters champion and was handed the opportunity to share the secrets of his success to legions of golfers and the worldwide sports media. During his acceptance speech, Johnson said "Because it's Easter today, I want to say, 'Thank You, Jesus'."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In each of his national and regional TV interviews following the traditional champion's dinner late Sunday, Johnson continued to speak openly about his faith and what it meant for him to share such an experience on one of the most important days of the year for Christians. He also expressed humility. "I'm very normal. I'm as normal as they come," he said. "I love to play a game for a living. I love to play this game for just what it is, golf. I appreciate it and I feel honored to play golf for a living. Today was a day of perseverance and patience and redemption."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You and I will probably never have an audience of millions on television or in print, but still God gives us opportunities to point others to our faith in Christ. For over a century, the Opening Day of baseball has been considered the official start of spring by millions. Committed fans may forget anniversaries, birthdays or holidays, but never Opening Day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Major League Baseball's first officially recognized franchise, the Cincinnati Reds, were historically awarded the privilege of "opening the Openers" and hosted the outings from 1876-1989. Opening Day is often accompanied by fireworks, bands, speeches, parades and more promotions than can be counted. More than an event, the Opening Day of baseball has become an experience.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On April 14, 1910, President, and baseball enthusiast, William Howard Taft became the first sitting President to attend Opening Day. Since then, eleven sitting U.S. presidents have tossed out the season's ceremonial first pitch. One standout, Harry S. Truman, showcased his ambidextrous talent when he threw out balls with both his right and left arm in 1950.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There have been many Opening Day notables during baseball’s first one hundred years. Ted Williams’ holds the record of hitting in every opening game he played. Cleveland pitcher Bob Feller threw an Opening Day no-hitter in 1940, the only Opening Day no-hitter in Major League history. Hammerin' Hank Aaron ignited the crowd at Riverfront Stadium on his first swing of the 1974 season when he hit his 714th career home run to tie Babe Ruth on the all-time list.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;One reason I think so many look forward to Opening Day is the message it sends, the message of beginning again. Every team is starting with the same record. The errors and mistakes of past seasons are forgotten, and a spirit of optimism and hope permeates the diamond. Each team believes that this will be their year, their chance to take a pennant and play for the World Championship. In a sense, Opening Day is a picture of the grace of God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Though we all live with regrets, God, through His amazing grace, is willing to forgive and accept us as His own. We can all begin again, fresh and new through the miracle of the New Birth. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “&lt;em&gt;If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; old things are passed away, all things have become new.&lt;/em&gt;” The message of this verse is the message of beginning again. There is a God who loves you and can make all things new. Jim Stovall is a blind man who has taken his limitations and turned them around as a path to success. He has become a national champion Olympic weightlifter, successful investment broker, entrepreneur, author and motivational speaker.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;i&gt;&lt;span style='font-style:italic'&gt;&lt;a href="http://www.theultimategift.com" target="_blank"&gt;The Ultimate Gift&lt;/a&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt; is a story of Red Stevens (played by James Garner), a self made billionaire who has left a video will to his very greedy family upon his death. His long time friend and lawyer, Ted Hamilton is in charge of distributing his oil estate and other belongings. Steven&amp;#8217;s greedy family leave angry, with no sense of grief or loss, because they do not get all that they want from the estate.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most disrespectful of the lot is Red Steven's out of control grandson, Jason Stevens who does not seem to care whether he gets anything or not. He is content to live his decadent lifestyle and move on. However, Red Stevens leaves him the choice of fulfilling a list of requirements before he can get his gift. The requirements consist of 12 tasks, which his uncle refers to as gifts: the gift of work, of laughter, of family, of learning, of problems, et cetera. If at any time he fails to meet them to Ted Hamilton's expectations, he will not get anything at all.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the process of completing the requirements, young Jason encounters many people who help him begin to realize what is truly important in life. In the process of helping people in many challenging circumstances, Jason is confronted with his own self-centered life. &amp;nbsp;Slowly he begins to see human beings as people of worth, not just objects blocking his way. In the end he gains a new perspective on what is really important. The ultimate gift is a valuable life lesson. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Proverbs 13:22 reminds us, &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;&amp;#8220;A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children.&amp;#8221;&lt;/span&gt; What type of inheritance are you planning to give to your children and grandchildren? Hopefully it is more than material wealth. I challenge you to give them the example of a balanced life. Many know Blanchard from his bestseller, &lt;i&gt;&lt;span style='font-style: italic'&gt;The One Minute Manager&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;. You may not know that Ken Blanchard became a Christian some years ago and is now an outspoken believer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During his talk, Blanchard shared a great story regarding a conversation with Tom Landry some years ago. Blanchard asked Landry how he was able to keep his head while coaching all those years in the uncertain and volatile world of professional football. The legendary coach paused a second, thinking about his answer, and then responded. He explained that his secret was maintaining his priorities, God first, then his wife, then his children and finally his work. Then he added, because he lived by those priorities even if he lost on Sunday, he still had a lot left.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Matthew 6:33 Christ taught us, &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;&amp;#8220;Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.&amp;#8221;&lt;/span&gt; Making God the priority of your life is much more than just going to church, it is making God the center of everything you do, including your work. When God created Adam, the first thing he did was to put him to work in the garden. We work for more that a paycheck, we work to fulfill a sacred calling.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This Sunday night we begin a six week study of the world of work. I think you will be pleasantly surprised to see how much the Bible says about work. Work does not have to be a drudgery of routine and boredom. The movie, titled &lt;i&gt;&lt;span style='font-style:italic'&gt;Amazing Grace&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;, tells the life story of a great champion for Christ, William Wilberforce.&amp;nbsp; Born in 1759 to a wealthy family, Wilberforce got away from his Christian roots during his college years at Cambridge. Influenced by others with low morals, he was caught up in a hedonistic lifestyle. In 1785 he experienced a spiritual encounter with Christ which he later described as a &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religious_conversion#Conversion_to_Christianity" title="Religious conversion" target="_blank"&gt;conversion experience&lt;/a&gt;. He resolved to commit his future life and work wholly to the service of God. He sought advice from &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Newton" title="John Newton" target="_blank"&gt;John Newton&lt;/a&gt;, the author of the famed hymn &lt;i&gt;&lt;span style='font-style:italic'&gt;Amazing Grace&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/i&gt;.&amp;nbsp; Though now a well-known pastor, Newton had been a slave trader before his salvation experience. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Wilberforce, a member of Parliament since the age of 21, believed that God wanted him to use his influence to end slavery in the British  Empire.&amp;nbsp; In 1791, after almost five years of preparation, he introduced his first anti-slavery bill, aimed at ending the slave trade. The bill was overwhelmingly defeated, but Wilberforce was undeterred. He continued presenting bills each session of Parliament until both houses voted to ban the slave trade in 1807.&amp;nbsp; He now turned his attention to passing a law that would free all the slaves in the empire. Along with his work in Parliament, he helped found several abolitionist and missions organizations. Now ill and aging, Wilberforce made his final speech before Parliament in 1823, pleading for support of a bill outlawing the practice of slavery. He retired from Parliament the next year but continued his efforts to pass anti-slavery legislation. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;He died on the morning of July 29, 1833. William Wilberforce was buried in &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Westminster_Abbey" title="Westminster Abbey" target="_blank"&gt;Westminster Abbey&lt;/a&gt; on 3 August, 1833. The funeral was attended by many members from both &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houses_of_Parliament" title="Houses of Parliament" target="_blank"&gt;Houses of Parliament&lt;/a&gt;, as well as many members of the public. One month later, Parliament passed the &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slavery_Abolition_Act" title="Slavery Abolition Act" target="_blank"&gt;Slavery Abolition Act&lt;/a&gt; that gave all slaves in the British Empire their freedom. It had taken more than 40 years for Wilberforce to see his dream fulfilled.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The life of William Wilberforce serves as a great example for believers today. He chose to live on principle, doing the right thing, even when it was unpopular. He persevered, ultimately triumphing over his adversaries and winning the day. He chose a cause that was bigger than himself, a cause worth living and dying for.&amp;nbsp; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Galatians 6:9-10 reminds us, &amp;#8220;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall reap if we do not grow weary. The exciting thing for me is that they were able to do so without compromising their Christian testimony.&amp;nbsp; &amp;quot;I'm so happy that Lovie got [to the Super Bowl] because he does things the right way,&amp;quot; said Dungy. In a story in the Miami Herald, Dungy said, &amp;quot;He's going to get there with a lot of class, no profanity, no intimidation, but just helping his guys play the best that they can.&amp;#8221;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Both Dungy and Smith are well known in their prospective cities for their squeaky clean lifestyles. Neither man uses profanity, drinks or smokes. They rarely raise their voices, in meetings with players or on the sideline during games. They carry themselves with an air of grace and control. They are not shy about revealing their religious beliefs. Their values and lifestyle seem to run counter to what most of the peers are doing. Smith was recently quoted in a Chicago paper, &amp;quot;That's the way I try to do it, and I think it's great that we're able to show the world not only that African-American coaches can do it, but Christian coaches can do it in a way that, you know, we can still win.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For years, Dungy has preached to players that faith and family came before football. He chases his assistants away from the office at night, insisting they spend the time at home. He is also well known for his charitable work off the football field. He has always been about helping others, his strong sense of community evidenced by an extensive record of supporting worthy causes. He raises money to fund college scholarships for underprivileged children, frequently speaks to faith-based groups and has worked with prison ministries and foster-parent organizations, among others.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Both men see their coaching career as a ministry opportunity, first to the men they are working with and then to the community. They like to be seen as counters to the long-held culture of fear associated with football coaches. They see their roles as teachers, not generals, who lead by explanation, not intimidation. When Smith began working for Dungy during his time at Tampa Bay, he was reminded of his own father, Thurman Smith, who was the ultimate optimist, showering his children with praise. Dungy, after the Buccaneers lost their first five games in 1996, did the same with his assistants. A philosophy of positive reinforcement was established. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&amp;quot;I think young people are struggling with their identity,&amp;quot; Dungy says. &amp;quot;What really makes them tick? What's important to them? We're getting a lot of conflicted messages. That's one thing that we, as a society, have to get across to our young guys: How are you going to be defined? Are you defined by being successful at work? By being an All-American or a Pro Bowler? Is that what makes us, or is it something different? Hopefully, we can get across to them that it's something different. It's what you are internally.&amp;quot;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Proverbs 3:5-6 teaches us to &amp;#8220;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make your paths straight.&lt;/span&gt;&amp;#8221; For years I have tried to remind God&amp;#8217;s people that when we go God&amp;#8217;s way we get God&amp;#8217;s best. If two men can maintain their Christian convictions and testimony in the midst of the rough and tumble world of the NFL, and be successful, you can do the same in your career field. Indianapolis Colts’ coach Tony Dungy and Chicago Bears’ coach Lovie Smith have made history.  Not only have they distinguished themselves as the first two African-American coaches to take teams to the Super Bowl, they have also &lt;a href="http://www.beyondtheultimate.org/" target="_blank"&gt;distinguished themselves as committed Christians&lt;/a&gt; who have used their notoriety to bring greater fame to the name of Christ.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During the trophy ceremony following the game, Dungy told the crowd of thousands and the television audience of millions, "I'm proud to be the first African-American coach to win this, but again, more than anything, Lovie Smith and I are not only African-American but also Christian coaches, showing you can do it the Lord's way. We're more proud of that."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dungy and Smith, who have been close friends for years, were featured in a full-page ad in USA Today on Friday before the big game. In the ad, sponsored by Campus Crusade for Christ, the two coaches said that while they may attain the height of their profession with a Super Bowl victory, their faith in Jesus Christ is still more important.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Sunday before leaving for Miami, Dungy spent the day at his home church, Northside New Era Baptist Church, prepping for the big game. "We could not let this get by without your Christian family saying, 'God bless you. We're proud of you,'" said the Rev. Clarence C. Moore.  "I believe he preached the greatest sermon without saying a word by walking in and giving God time before the biggest game of his life." added Moore. "That's who he is and he expects that of the people around him." &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other members of the Bears and Colts organizations are determined to use their worldwide platform to express the difference their faith in Christ makes in their lives, too.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Coaches have sold cars and airlines for years [in commercials], so why shouldn’t they promote the King of kings and Lord of lords?" said Colts chaplain Ken Johnson, a close friend and prayer partner of Dungy. "We don’t have to compromise our views for the world and Tony is not going to compromise his before the world’s media this week."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Former NFL player and Bears chaplain Harry Swayne said he’s excited that Smith and the players he’s been working with for years can share what is most important during this media-crazed week leading up to Super Bowl XLI. "I’ve told them not to set trophies before God," Swayne said. "One of the things we’ve been talking about in our Bible studies is, ‘finish,’ and I’ve told our guys not to forget who brought you here. Don’t forget Christ."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God has given each of us a platform to proclaim Christ and bring Him greater fame.  Christ told his followers, “&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.&lt;/span&gt;” Your platform may not be in front of 90 million people on the world stage, but still it is significant. This is the question Wesley Autrey asked himself as he watched a young New York stranger fall between the subway tracks in front of an approaching train. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Harlem native Wesley Autrey, a 50-year-old construction worker and Navy veteran was waiting for a subway with his two young daughters. Nearby, a man collapsed, his body convulsing due to a seizure. Autrey and two women rushed to help as the man appeared to regain his composure.&amp;nbsp; Cameron Hollopeter, 20, managed to get up, but then stumbled to the platform edge and fell to the tracks, between the two rails. The headlights of the No.1 train appeared. &amp;#8220;I had to make a split decision,&amp;#8221; Autrey said. So he made one, and leapt.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As the train approached, Mr. Autrey lay on Mr. Hollopeter, his heart pounding, pressing him down in a space roughly a foot deep. The train&amp;#8217;s brakes screeched, but it could not stop in time. Five cars rolled overhead before the train stopped, the cars passing inches from his head, smudging his blue knit cap with grease. Mr. Autrey heard onlookers&amp;#8217; screams. &amp;#8220;We&amp;#8217;re O.K. down here,&amp;#8221; he yelled, &amp;#8220;but I&amp;#8217;ve got two daughters up there. Let them know their father&amp;#8217;s O.K.&amp;#8221; He heard cries of wonder, and applause. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the weeks following his heroic act, Autrey has been the focus of massive media attention.&amp;nbsp; Along with multiple television appearances, he was even recognized by President Bush during his State of the Union address last week. Autrey was surprised by the attention drawn to his unselfish act. In a very humble demeanor he told the press, &amp;#8220;I don&amp;#8217;t feel like I did something spectacular; I just saw someone who needed help. I don't think I did anything heroic. I just saved a life. I don't call myself a hero because the real heroes are overseas dying for you and me.&amp;#8221;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 reminds us that each of us is vulnerable to falling, &amp;#8220;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!&lt;/span&gt;&amp;#8221; Our fall may be a financial fall, a moral fall, a health fall or a marriage fall. Regardless of the fall, we need to have men around us who can help us get back on our feet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Perhaps you don&amp;#8217;t have someone out there watching your back. This is what Men&amp;#8217;s Ministry is all about.&amp;nbsp; The teaching, food and fellowship are great, but the ultimate goal is building meaningful relationships with other men. Lanphier was concerned about the lack of spiritual interest in his city and nation.&amp;nbsp; The United States was in spiritual, political, and economic decline. Many people were disillusioned with spiritual things because of preachers who had repeatedly predicted the end of the world in the 1840's. Agitation over slavery was breeding political unrest, and civil war seemed near. &amp;nbsp;He knew they needed revival and prayer was the key.&amp;nbsp; He had rented a hall on Fulton   Street and advertised for men to come and pray on their lunch breaks.&amp;nbsp; He was discouraged when only six showed up, but was reminded that Christ promised to be present when only two or three gathered in His name. They agreed to meet again next week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The third week of the prayer meetings, forty participated and they asked for daily meetings. Within six months 10,000 people were gathering daily for prayer in New York City alone. Other cities experienced a renewed interest in prayer, too. In Chicago, the Metropolitan Theater was filled every day with 2000 praying people. In Louisville, several thousand came to the Masonic Temple for prayer each morning. 2,000 assembled for daily prayer in Cleveland and St. Louis churches were filled for months at a time. In many places tents were set up for prayer.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 1858 the New York Tribune devoted an entire issue to news of the revival. News of the revival traveled west by telegraph. Lay people, not church leaders, led the meetings. Prayer, rather than preaching, was the main focus. The meetings themselves were informal -- any person might pray, speak, lead in a song, or give a word of testimony, with a five minute limit placed on each speaker. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Thus the small prayer meeting of Jeremy Lanphier led to the Third Great Awakening. Many of the thousands who died in the Civil War came to faith in Christ during the Prayer Revival. This was the first revival beginning in America with a worldwide impact. The revival spread to Ireland, Scotland, Wales, England, Europe, South Africa, India, Australia, and the Pacific islands.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This week our church is preparing for a revival conference and I am asking our men to lead the way.&amp;nbsp; Will you take some time to pray and fast over the next four days as we prepare for Sunday? &amp;nbsp;Will you lead out and bring your family to each of the conference sessions? In 1914, the armies of Europe had become bogged down in a new and horrible type of warfare, called trench warfare.  Over hundreds of miles, millions of men lived in trenches, trading fire with enemy soldiers as close as sixty yards away. During the first months of the war, the fighting had been fierce, causing hundreds of thousands of casualties.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On Christmas Eve, a group of German soldiers placed some candles on small trees and set them on the edge of their trench.  One German soldier began to sing the familiar German carol, &lt;i&gt;Silent Night&lt;/i&gt;.  Soldiers on the British side responded by singing other carols.  Hand made &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christmas_truce" target="_blank"&gt;signs offering a truce&lt;/a&gt; began to appear up and down the line. Soon men began to venture out into “no man’s land” to greet each other and exchange gifts of chocolate cake, cognac, postcards, newspapers, and tobacco.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It was also a time to bury the dead who up to this point had been unreachable in “no man’s land.” At one point, soldiers from both sides stood around a fresh grave and quoted the 23rd Psalm together.  As Christmas day dawned, the truce began to spread up and down the lines. At one point a British soldier pulled out a soccer ball and the Germans proceeded to beat the British in a pick-up soccer game.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately the truce was short lived.  Within days the war was back with all of its ferocity and violence.  Though three more Christmas’s would come and go, there would be no more truces. By the time the war ended in November of 1918, 8 million would die and another 21 million would be wounded.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A relatively unknown Scottish poet Frederick Niven, writing about the event in his poem, &lt;i&gt;A Carol from Flanders&lt;/i&gt;, summed up the sentiments of millions in his day and ours:&lt;br /&gt;O ye who read this truthful rime&lt;br /&gt;    From Flanders, kneel and say:&lt;br /&gt;God speed the time when every day&lt;br /&gt;    Shall be as Christmas Day.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My friend, in the midst of the frustration and business of life, may the Lord grant you a peaceful and restful Christmas, surrounded by family and friends. On the trip home, they planned to take a shortcut over the little traveled Bear Camp Road through the rugged Oregon mountain wilderness near Rogue River. During the night, they began to encounter heavy snow. Soon their 2005 Saab wagon was stuck and they huddled together for warmth, thinking someone would find them in the morning, but no one came.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For three days they ran the car heater to stay warm and ate what little food they had with them. When the gas ran out they burned all the tires, even the spare, to stay warm. With no more heat and food running out, Kim decided he would leave the vehicle and look for help.  He said he would return in five hours, but was gone for two days.  On the second day, the vehicle was spotted by a search helicopter and Kim’s wife and his two daughters were rescued.  Kim’s body was found about a mile from the vehicle.  Gauging by his tracks, he had walked about ten miles in a circle before succumbing to hypothermia.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Speaking with reporters after Kim’s body was found, Terri Stone, an innkeeper at the lodge in Gold Beach, where the Kims were to have stayed the night of Nov. 25, said the Bear Camp Road is shown on some Internet road-direction sites as the best way to get to the coast from Grants Pass, but she advises against it. "It looks like the shortest distance, but it is very, very treacherous," she said.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sometimes we are tempted to take moral shortcuts in the course of our lives.  God’s word warns us, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.&lt;/span&gt;” Lured by the promise of easy, painless success, men often compromise biblical standards and ignore the internal moral GPS God has given us – our conscience. Paul reminded the Corinthians, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;For our boasting is this: the testimony of our conscience that we conducted ourselves in the world in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom but by the grace of God, and more abundantly toward you.&lt;/span&gt;”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sadly, we are not the only ones who suffer when we make a wrong moral choice, our families suffer as well. My brother in Christ, today you may be facing a severe temptation to compromise what you know is right, in order to get ahead. May God give you the grace and courage to do the right thing, to make the right choice, regardless of the sacrifice and inconvenience. Several months ago I had the opportunity to attend a special preview of the movie. I want to highly recommend it to you. It is inspiring, entertaining and most importantly, true to the biblical narrative. One of the things I most enjoyed was the portrayal of Joseph as a man of faith, courage and compassion&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In the third chapter of the Gospel of Luke we read “&lt;em&gt;When He began His ministry, Jesus Himself was about thirty years of age, being supposedly the son of Joseph …&lt;/em&gt;” Even though Joseph was not Christ’s natural father, he certainly was a significant father figure during Christ’s formative years. Amazingly, we know very little about this man who along with Mary had the greatest influence on the physical, emotional and spiritual development of the Son of God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Joseph is described as a humble, very ordinary man. Though he was a descendent of the great King David, he was one of the common people. He was said to be a carpenter (Matthew 13:55). The word actually describes any common laborer who worked with wood or stone. His offering as described in Luke 2:24 was the humble offering of doves, rather than the more expensive lamb.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In Matthew 1:19 we find an insight into why God chose this humble, ordinary man to raise his son, “&lt;em&gt;And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man …&lt;/em&gt;” What is a “righteous man”? A righteous man is simply one who is right with God and right with others. He has accepted God’s “&lt;em&gt;gift of righteousness&lt;/em&gt;” (Romans 5:17), allowing him to experience the forgiveness of sin and acceptance into God’s family.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When facing moral decisions, he consistently tries to do the right thing (1 John 3:7). In his relationship with others, He deliberately chooses to live according to God's commands, treating others as he himself would want to be treated. In Proverbs 20:7, God promises a special blessing for the righteous man, “&lt;em&gt;The righteous man leads a blameless life; blessed are his children after him.&lt;/em&gt;”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Like me, you may identify with a common, ordinary person like Joseph. We do not possess great gifts or achieve significant notoriety. We like to fly under the radar most of the time. It excites me to think that God uses ordinary people to accomplish extraordinary things. It gratifies me to believe that a righteous man can leave an incredible legacy to his children and grandchildren. After reading several biographies of his life, I have a collection of some of my favorite &lt;st1:city st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;Lincoln&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt; stores. In this season of thanksgiving, I thought I would share one with you.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;    &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;The American Civil War took a heavy toll on the emotional and physical health of President Lincoln. Besides the many meetings with his cabinet and the military regarding the logistics of funding and fighting the war, &lt;st1:city st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;Lincoln&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt; was constantly barraged by people asking for special favors.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;        &lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;At this time in history, it was thought that the people should have unfettered access to their president. As a result, &lt;st1:city st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;Lincoln&lt;/st1:place&gt;&lt;/st1:city&gt;’s days, and sometimes evenings, were filled with appointments with people who wanted things. There were businessmen asking for government contracts, politicians asking for political favors or appointments, and many friends or family members of soldiers who were asking for special dispensations. Incredibly patient with all, the President sat and listened to each plea, promising to do what he could to oblige them.&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;On one particularly busy day, the President sat down to visit with a woman who had requested an appointment. He began the conversation with his obligatory, “What do you need from me?” She responded, “I don’t need anything from you, Mr. President. I cannot imagine the pressures you are under and the hardships you are enduring. I thought I might try to bring you a little relief and cheer. I have brought you some fresh baked cookies and wanted to say thank you for all you are doing for our country.”&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;&lt;o:p&gt;&lt;/o:p&gt;Dumbfounded for a moment, the President arose to say, “Dear woman, words cannot express my appreciation for your thoughtfulness. For months I have sat here each day to hear request after request. You are the first person I can remember who has come to give me something, rather than ask me for something. Thank you for your kindness.”&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;The scripture commands us to “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good!&lt;/span&gt;” Often we rush into the presence of God to ask for help or to meet a need, which He encourages us to do. How often do we come to Him just to say “thanks.” We teach and expect our children to say “thank you” when they receive a gift. Perhaps we should model a thankful heart for them as well.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p class="MsoNormal"&gt;Dear brother in Christ, in this season of Thanksgiving, I encourage you to lead your family to experience the true meaning of Thanksgiving. One of our family traditions as we sit down to Thanksgiving Dinner is to give each family member an opportunity to share what he or she is thankful for. They came from all over the state of Ohio, some driving up to 90 minutes to attend what was being called “The Main Event”. They did not come to cheer on their #1 ranked team or to heap accolades on &lt;a href="http://ohiostatebuckeyes.cstv.com/sports/m-footbl/mtt/tressel_jim00.html" target="_blank"&gt;Coach Jim Tressel&lt;/a&gt; and his star players. Instead, they came to hear the coach and several players give God the glory for their successes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"Once you understand that God is behind everything, it gives you strength," wide receiver Roy Hall told the crowd. Coach Tressel said he wanted to step away from his role of coach and speak "as a child of God." He told the crowd that in 1969 he attended a high school sports summer camp where retired New York Yankees second baseman Bobby Richardson asked him, "If the game of life ended tonight, would you be a winner?"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Senior Joe Penton echoed those comments. "We would feel so bad talking about our relationship with Christ tonight, without giving you an opportunity to enter into that very same relationship, Penton says, "When Jesus Christ, God in human flesh, died on that cross, he took on the penalty for our sin. Because he paid it, we can have a relationship with Him. We can know Him personally. We can have the promise of eternal life -- living forever with God."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How exciting to see Coach Tressel and his team using their notoriety to honor Christ and to influence people to believe in Him. Think what might happen if every Christian would use his or her influence to bring attention to Christ and the gospel of grace.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1 Corinthians 10:31 reminds us, “&lt;em&gt;So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”  &lt;/em&gt;My friend, you were made to do one primary thing – to bring glory to God.  That is your greatest purpose and highest calling. If even the most mundane things like eating and drinking, can be used to glorify God, think how more effective it would be to use your gifts, talents, strengths and resources to honor Christ. On September 26, 2006 his wife found him slumped in his chair on the back porch of their &lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:city st="on"&gt;Roanoke&lt;/st1:city&gt;&lt;/st1:place&gt; ranch. He had died quietly at the age of 94.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After graduating from high school, Nelson got a job as a file clerk in the accounting office of the &lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;Forth&lt;/st1:place&gt; Worth and Denver Railroad and played golf in his spare time. He lost his job during the Great Depression but found work in 1931 with a bankers’ magazine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger2/6205/66805053067766/1600/byron2.0.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger2/6205/66805053067766/200/byron2.jpg" alt="" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The same year, he entered his first tournament, the National Amateur in &lt;st1:place st="on"&gt;&lt;st1:city st="on"&gt;Chicago&lt;/st1:city&gt;&lt;/st1:place&gt;, where he missed qualifying by one stroke. With jobs hard to find, he turned professional in 1932. In 1944, he won 13 of the 23 tournaments he played, but it was the following year that will forever live as one of the greatest in golf history.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“The Streak” as it came to be called, was Nelson’s incredible achievement of winning 11 tournaments in a row in 1945. He went on to win 18 tournaments in 1945, also a record for a calendar year. He captured 31 of 54 tournaments in 1944-45, and won a total of 52 events, including five majors. Nelson was voted AP Male Athlete of the Year in 1944 and 1945. He was elected to the PGA Hall of Fame in 1953 and to the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. Players today say it is doubtful that anyone will match or beat the record of 11 tournament wins in a row.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When asked how he wanted to be remembered. Nelson often responded, “I think the thing people will always talk about me is my degree of consistency on the golf course, winning money in 113 tournaments, but I want to be remembered as a good man and a Christian man. That’s all that really matters.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Nelson was an active member at the Richland Hills Church of Christ and proudly stated that he&lt;a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger2/6205/66805053067766/1600/byron.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0pt 0pt 10px 10px; float: right; cursor: pointer;" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger2/6205/66805053067766/200/byron.jpg" alt="" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt; was a Christian, churchgoing man who “didn’t smoke, drink or carouse or hang with girls who do.” PGA Tour chaplain Larry Moody, who knew Nelson well, commented, “Byron was a great man and a great golfer, but most importantly he was a great follower of Jesus Christ. He wasn’t pushy, but he would never hesitate to tell you if somebody said he was great that it was because of who Jesus Christ was in him.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God also has a Hall of Fame. Hebrews chapter 11 is sometimes referred to as “God’s Faith Hall of Fame.” Here we are told that Moses chose to be remembered for his faith, rather than for worldly fame, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward.&lt;/span&gt;”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;My friend, I hope you will follow Moses’ and Byron’s example and live your life with an eye on eternity. He was sitting in a front row seat along the left-field line in Wrigley Field watching game six of the 2003 National League playoff. The Cubs were leading the Marlins 3-0 and were ahead in the series three games to two. They were five outs away from reaching the World Series for the first time since 1945, and possibly winning it for the first time since 1908.&lt;p&gt;&lt;a href="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger2/6205/66805053067766/1600/bartman.2.jpg"&gt;&lt;img style="margin: 0px 10px 10px 0px; float: left;" alt="Bartman and Alou" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/blogger2/6205/66805053067766/400/bartman.0.jpg" border="0" /&gt;&lt;/a&gt;The Marlin batter hit a long pop foul ball in Bartman's direction. Cubs left fielder Moises Alou was in position to attempt a catch, but Bartman, who was watching the ball and not the fielder, blocked the ball from Alou's glove. Alou slammed his glove down in frustration, and the Cubs argued for an interference call. The umpire ruled no interference and the game continued.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Chicago fans watched in horror as the Cubs defense disintegrated. After several Cubs errors, the Marlins ended the inning with eight runs, eventually winning the game and forcing a seventh game in the series. Bartman had to be led away from the park under escort for his own safety. Many other fans attempted to throw garbage at him and Bartman had to shield himself with his jacket. Some Cubs fans blamed Bartman for the Cubs losing this game and, ultimately, their chance at reaching the World Series (which the Marlins went on to win).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For months after the incident, Bartman's name was used as the butt of jokes on late night television and spoofed on multiple sit coms. The name "Bartman" eventually found its way into the baseball lexicon describing any fan that interferes with play during a game.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Disappointment is a powerful and potentially destructive emotion. Unmet goals, unrealized dreams and dashed expectations can take their toll on us, sapping our strength and energy, even leading to despair. Years ago I came across a poem by Edith Young that helped me put my disappointment in the right context. The movie and book tell the story of the &lt;a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Iwo_Jima" target="_blank"&gt;Battle of Iwo Jima&lt;/a&gt;, one of the most ferocious and costly battles of the Second World War.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;On February 19, 1945 70,000 Americans, consisting mainly of the 3rd, 4th and 5th Marine Divisions of the Fifth Marine Amphibious Corps, including supporting sea and air units, attacked the Japanese defenses on Iwo Jima island. The 22,000 Japanese defenders had been preparing for the invasion for two years and had determined to fight to the death since they were defending Japanese soil for the first time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;At the end of the month long battle, the Americans would suffer 26,000 casualties, including more than 6,800 deaths. Almost all of the 22,000 Japanese defenders died due to their fanatical loyalty to the Japanese Emperor. One of the most famous pictures in the history of photography came out of the battle when photographer Joe Rosenthal snapped a shot of six marines raising the American flag on Mt. Suribachi.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For a generation of Americans, the name Iwo Jima became synonymous with heroism and valor. The story of Sgt Charles A Bateman of Cooperstown, NY, became one of hundreds of incredible stories of courage. Bateman was slammed by a 320 mm spigot mortar. He woke up on a hospital ship with a tag on his big toe that said "Concussion." He later wrote, "Didn't look serious to me so I jumped ship, went ashore and rejoined my unit. So, I was missing then, officially MIA. Sorrowfully, a telegram saying that got to my family. You can imagine their relief when they found the message was wrong."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I find incredible inspiration in Sgt. Bateman’s commitment to his fellow Marines and to the cause of victory. Some men would have used this kind of injury as a “million dollar wound,” an opportunity to stay out of harm’s way. Evidently this never occurred to Bateman, who thought only of his duty to his comrades and country.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In 2 Timothy 2:3, the Scripture uses the analogy of military service to illustrate the Christian’s devotion to Christ, “&lt;em&gt;Endure hardship with us like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.&lt;/em&gt;” Men, we are at war, a spiritual war. We can expect hardship, attack, perhaps even wounds from time to time. We must deal with difficult emotions of fear, loneliness and frustration. This is what soldiers do. The New York Giants were playing on their home field  against their cross town rivals, the Brooklyn Dodgers. They had split the  first two games of the three game playoff. In the bottom of the ninth, Brooklyn held a demanding 4-1 lead and seemed  to have clinched the pennant.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Giants  scored one run and placed two men on base while only using one out. Then,  Bobby Thomson stepped to the plate against Ralph Branca, who had been brought in to replace a tiring Don Newcombe.  Thomson hit the 0-1 pitch deep into the left field stands and the crowd erupted.  Giants' fans swarmed the field to share in the victory and carried Thomson on  their shoulders, while Branca slowly walked off the field in stunned  silence.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In his new book, &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;The Echoing Green&lt;/span&gt;, Joshua Prager reveals a secret that possibly gave Bobby Thompson an edge. The Giants had been stealing signs. A Giant coach, stationed behind the center field fence, was clandestinely observing the opposing catcher’s signals through a telescope  and relaying the signals to the Giant batters.  Knowing which pitch was  coming obviously gave Thompson an edge. Though Thompson and the Giants won the  game, the revelation that they did so by cheating tarnishes the  victory.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You and I live in a world where we are constantly tempted to compromise our convictions and  standards in order to get an edge on our competitors. The allure of success,  whether in business of other arenas, often overpowers the small voice of  conscience. In Luke 12:2-3 Christ proclaimed, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;There is nothing concealed that  will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What you have said  in the dark will be heard in the daylight, and what you have whispered in the  ear in the inner rooms will be proclaimed from the roofs.&lt;/span&gt;”  I remind you  that God sees and hears all we do and say, and will make it public on the day of  Christ’s return. Born the son of President John Quincy Adams and the grandson of President John Adams, he became an influential lawyer, politician, diplomat and writer. Adams was elected to the Massachusetts legislature, the United States House of Representatives and was appointed by President Abraham Lincoln as the Ambassador to Great Britain. As Ambassador to Great Britain, he played a major role in keeping the English from siding with the South during the Civil War. He returned to America as a hero. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With all of his outward successes, however, Adams appeared to struggle with his priorities. Like many men, he seemed to loose perspective of the importance of spending time with his children. This is evidenced by a rather obscure entry in his daily diary. One day he entered: "Went fishing with my son today--a day wasted." The son he referenced was his oldest child, Brook, who also kept a diary, which is still in existence. On that same day, Brook Adams made this entry: "Went fishing with my father--the most wonderful day of my life!"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What a contrast in how father and son viewed the day they spent together. How ironic that what the father viewed as a waste of time, the son saw as an investment of time. Never underestimate the importance of spending time with your children and grandchildren. Your time is one of the most valuable gifts you can give them.  Investing time in people you love will result in lifelong dividends of love and affection. His expectations for the coming season are dashed when his star player transfers to another team. Compounding his discouragement, he and his wife are facing infertility and he has recently discovered that a group of fathers are secretly organizing to have him dismissed as head coach.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is the plot for the new movie &lt;a href="http://www.facingthegiants.com/" target="_blank"&gt;Facing the Giants&lt;/a&gt; that opens this Friday night &lt;a href="http://movies.yahoo.com/showtimes/movie?z=76051&amp;date=20061006&amp;amp;mid=1809738431" target="_blank"&gt;in area theaters&lt;/a&gt;. The story illustrates how a man who is drowning in discouragement can find strength and hope from his relationship with Christ. Using a sports scenario, the movie shows how faith can be integrated into every day life, allowing us to gain victory over the challenges and difficulties that plague us. It also teaches how one man’s influence can impact the lives of many more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Facing the Giants has been described as a blend of Rocky, Hoosiers and Friday Night Lights. It is rated PG because of its religious themes. It seemed there was nothing the man couldn’t do in baseball. At the plate he was one of the league’s best hitters with a career total of 3283 hits, and 660 home runs. He was also a fabulous base runner.  To top it off, he was a golden glove award winner for four seasons. He was a fan favorite, playing in 24 All-Star games and winning two “most valuable player” awards over four World Series.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When it came time for the Hall of Fame vote, you would have thought it would have been a slam dunk. Yet, when Mays was eligible to be voted into the Hall of Fame, 23 out of 431 baseball writers voted against him.  On what basis did these baseball experts think a living legend like Willie Mays should not be in the Hall of Fame?  When asked how they could not vote for the all-star, several of the writers said, “Well, he wasn’t always friendly to us!”  Since when did friendliness become a criterion for the Hall of Fame?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Bible teaches us, “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.&lt;/span&gt;” Certainly this should be our goal. We should not go out of our way to make enemies. We should build more bridges than walls, but the harsh reality is you cannot please everyone. No matter how well you perform, no matter how hard you try, someone will find fault with you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Even Christ had His enemies.  If the Son of God cannot please everyone, what hope do you and I have? Actually, one of the most important lessons I have learned along the way is that I am not called to please everyone, but only to please One, Jesus Christ. The movie &lt;i&gt;Invincible&lt;/i&gt; is based on the life of Vince Papale. Vince had a dream. His dream was to play professional football. He had graduated from Philadelphia's University on a track scholarship. He played in the World Football League for two years until it folded in 1975. At 30 years of age, his prospects for playing in the NFL were remote to say the least.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Enter Dick Vermeil. Dick also had a dream. A college coach at UCLA, he wanted to coach professional football. In 1976 he was hired as head coach by the Philadelphia Eagles. He was facing some big challenges, especially since the team was coming off of 11 straight loosing seasons. As a publicity stunt, he decided to publicize an open tryout in the Philadelphia area. He admits that he was more interested in stirring up the team than finding new players.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Vince Papale tried out and so impressed Vermeil with his speed and grace that he received an offer to attend training camp and eventually earned a place on the team. At the age of 30, Papale became the oldest rookie in the history of the NFL to play without the benefit of college football experience. He went on to play wide receiver and special teams for the Philadelphia Eagles from 1976 through 1978. During that time, he played in 41 of 44 regular season games recording two fumble recoveries and one fifteen-yard reception. He was voted Special Teams Captain by his teammates, and "Man of the Year" by the Eagles in 1978 for his many charitable activities. A shoulder injury ended his career in 1979. After retiring from the NFL, he worked as a TV and radio broadcaster for eight years, then became a commercial mortgage banker.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What is your dream? Psalm 34:12 teaches us to “&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Delight yourself in the LORD; and He will give you the desires of your heart.&lt;/span&gt;” I hope your heart desire is something more noble and enduring than just playing in the NFL. God is looking for men with pure desires who will plant them by faith in the will of God and trust they will return in His perfect timing.
